New Delhi: India‘s domestic companies contributed a major, indigenously developed technology to literally boost the BrahMos cruise missile that was successfully tested today.

The BrahMos, a India-Russia joint venture, featured an India-made propulsion system, air frame, power supply and other major indigenous components, indicating a major localisation of critical technologies and a successful creation of an ecosystem that caters to the production of the world’s first operational supersonic cruise missile.

The latest test took place from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha‘s coast and the missile was successfully test-fired for its full range of 290 km during the launch jointly conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited.

“With this successful mission, the indigenous content in the formidable weapon has reached a high value, thus bolstering India’s defence indigenisation and the flagship ‘Make in India‘ programme,” a Ministry of Defence statement said.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh congratulated the team from DRDO, BrahMos and the Indian private sector for today’s successful mission.

DRDO Chairman and Department of Defence Research and Development Secretary Dr G. Satheesh Reddy and DRDO Director General for Missiles and Strategic Systems M. S. R. Prasad also congratulated the team for the successful launch.

DRDO Director General for BrahMos and BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited Chief Executive Dr Sudhir Kumar Mishra, Defence Research and Development Laboratory Director Dr Dashrath Ram and ITR Director Dr B. K. Das coordinated and witnessed the entire mission at the launch site and termed the successful flight test as a landmark achievement in enhancing India’s ‘Make in India’ capabilities.

Jointly developed by India and Russia, the versatile BrahMos cruise missile has been operationalised in all the three Indian armed forces, including a steep dive and an air-launched variants.
