New Delhi: India today successfully tested a supersonic missile assisted release of a torpedo, in a boost to its navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) is a missile-assisted release of lightweight Anti-Submarine Torpedo System for anti-submarine warfare operations far beyond a torpedo’s range.

“This launch and demonstration is significant in establishing anti-submarine warfare capabilities,” a Ministry of Defence statement said.

Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists for the important feat.

DRDO chairman and Secretary for Defence Research and Development Dr G. Satheesh Reddy said SMART is a game-changer technology demonstration in the anti-submarine warfare.

The test was carried out from the Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast and all mission objectives, including missile flight up to the range and altitude, separation of the nose cone, release of the torpedo, and deployment of the velocity reduction mechanism have been met perfectly, the statement said.

The tracking stations — Radars and Electro Optical Systems — along the coast and the telemetry stations including down range ships monitored all the events.

A number of DRDO laboratories including Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Research Centre Imarat at Hyderabad, Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment at Agra, and Naval Science & Technological Laboratory at Visakhapatnam have developed the technologies required for SMART.
